Movie Review: Mirror, Mirror - Centreville, VA Patch

Mirror, Mirror is the first and lighter of two movies based on the tale of Snow White to be released this year. It's a charming, sweet, albeit flawed little confection, worth seeing if you love inventive production and costume design, but especially if you have a soft spot for the work of director Tarsem Singh, who supplies some moments of visual brilliance his fans have come to love.

When a movie lover walks into a film helmed by Singh, they might have certain expectations. This artistic, controversial director is known for visually stunning yet incomprehensible movies like The Fall, The Cell, and most recently, The Immortals. He became famous with the music videos "Hold On" by En Vogue, and "Losing My Religion" for REM, which won Best Video of the Year at the 1991 MTV Awards.

Mirror, Mirror has a cast lead by A-lister Julia Roberts and IT boy Armie Hammer (of The Social Network, J Edgar, and the upcoming The Lone Ranger) and exhibits Singh's unique sensibility, complete with fantastical visual landscapes, with help from his production designer Tom Foden, and Kabuki-esque costuming from longtime collaborator Eiko Ishioka, who passed away in January. His enthusiastic devotees maintain Singh can and will ultimately build a career represented by well-reviewed blockbusters that weave together his trademark visual palette with storytelling that holds together. They are rooting for him to find a vehicle that will make that happen. With Mirror, Mirror, the first film directed by him appropriate for kids, he does get pretty close.

There was much brouhaha about the previews, which displeased Singh and got lots of press. I now see why. I was driven into the theatre by mix of responsibility for my readers and a strong curiosity about what Singh would do with such a mainstream studio film. The previews made it look like a silly retread most moviegoers would give a pass. Actually, although it isn't nearly as funny as I thought it might be, and certainly very goofy in spots, the dialogue is clever, and should appeal to both children and adults with its mix of broad humor and more subtle adult dialogue, which will fly over kids' heads.

While the story is the expected girl power "I rescue myself, thank you" switch up, the characters played by Lilly Collins (Snow White), Armie Hammer (Prince Alcott), and a host of LP (little people) actors (as the seven dwarfs) are more fully developed than in the usual fairy tale fare.

Julia Roberts stars as the Evil Queen. I found her underwhelming, with less bite than I would have liked for someone keeping Snow White and a whole spellbound kingdom under her thumb. Perhaps it was so as not to scare younger viewers, but I found her character and its portrayal far less menacing than, say, Mother Gothel in the Disney cartoon Tangled. She seemed to back away from playing the murderous menace the Queen was supposed to be. I also found the inconsistent English accent Roberts used distracting. Since she's done well with accents before, I have to wonder what acting choice lead her to slip in and out of it so often.

As the villain of the film, she's serviceable, but she doesn't create a lasting impression that will put this role anywhere near her best work. Her costumes, however, are the stuff of dreams. Her gowns are to die for, which may explain why her subjects are starving, as we are told that's where all their tax money is going. Well, Queen, at least it shows in your clothes!

Lilly Collins and Armie Hammer are the real stars here. She charms, he amuses, and together they are a believably smitten duo. Their interactions with the other characters in the film, however, are where they both shine the most.

As you can imagine, if being a person of color means fighting the five great actors getting all the roles, being a little person actor in Hollywood means you must be the very best?and they have indeed brought together the best here, including Mark Povinelli as Half Pint (who has a burning crush on Snow White) Danny Woodburn as Grimm (sort of the Grumpy of his pals) and Jordan Prentice as Napoleon (the leader of the group). They are all memorable actors, each with impressive lists of other movie and TV show credits, and are thoroughly enjoyable here.

The film, clocking in at 1 hour and 35 minutes, moves along swiftly enough, always marked by Singh's unique brand of wild inventiveness, but with varying degrees of success. Some action involving supposedly dangerous life sized puppets juxtaposed with comedic music seems forced and blunted, while the most engaging moments are those with Snow White training and fighting with swords, or scenes with the fantastical environments Singh and his crew create, like the castle and dwarf cottage interiors or the Queen's magical alternate world.

Dark and creepy fairy tales are very in vogue, with Grimm and Once Upon a Time on TV, and the oft compared upcoming Snow White and the Huntsman all bringing the gruesome cautionary aspects of these stories back to the forefront. It's nice to see an alternative version of Snow White that is still watchable and optimistic and won't give little kids nightmares. Sometimes fairy tales can use a little froth. Snow might be a determined young lady on a mission, and may know how to handle a sword, but her gown and crown still take your breath away.

Speaking of costumes, Bjork called. She wants respect back for the time she wore that swan-inspired fashion at the Oscars?It was definitely inspiration for one of Snow's outfits. It's also clear Audrey Hepburn in Roman Holiday was an inspiration for Lilly Collins's styling in general, although her imposing eyebrows are reminiscent of a younger Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman. The metrosexual man inside me wants to mention the gorgeous long coat Armie Hammer wears and whips off during a sword fight. Why don't American men have access to great pieces like this for their wardrobe? (Oh, yeah, 'cause they wouldn't buy them. But I would!)

I urge movie fans looking for family fun at the multiplex for kids 7 and up to consider Mirror, Mirror as a possibility. Is it something you adult couples or pals looking for a great night of hanging out should run to with a passion at your earliest convenience? No. But for families who look for movies that inspire a child's imagination and eye for visual creativity while at the same time giving them something more sophisticated to enjoy, this could be just the ticket. Adult women who love fairy tales and pretty things will also find bits to appreciate here, as will movie lovers curious to see a more mainstream expression of Singh's filmmaking style.

Walking out of the movie, I broke into a discussion about the tiara in Mirror, Mirror with an 8-year-old girl. She didn't bring up the message of girl power or independent thinking, although it might be sinking into her brain somewhere. I figure with all the negatives in this world, there's nothing wrong with appreciating some of the more beautiful, sparkling things. I'm glad Tarsem Singh is the one given a chance to show them to her.

When you think about the internet, networks, bandwidth and mobile, Allot is one of the companies that probably not what comes to mind first, but their products and services play an integral part in how we are using all of them.

You also may have a distain for companies like ALLT because they are the folks who have the technology track, meter and somewhat enforce bandwidth consumption.? As consumers are surfing the web on their mobile devices, Allots? solutions monitor, route and record details for providers like AT&T, Verizon and others to manage traffic per application, per subscriber, per cell, per service plan, and according to local network conditions.

As VOIP, streaming video and IM traffic grow, so does potential business for Allot.? ?Deep packet inspection technology? or Allots? ?Dynamic Actionable Recognition Technology? (DART) allows carriers to pinpoint what programs and services being used by consumers are sucking up bandwidth.? Carriers in turn, can optimize networks and charge you for what you use.? They say it?s better for all, but at the end of the day, consumers? usage is being capped and carriers are making more money, I wouldn?t say that?s balanced.

The days of wireless, unlimited bandwidth usage are going away (for the time being at least) and just about every American carrier has now moved to pay per usage platforms as opposed to flat fee for unlimited usage.?

Financials & Recent Developments
Allot is a small-cap (663 million mar-cap) based in Israel. Because the company is still small, its analyst coverage is limited to only 2.? In its most recent report, the company reported 12 cents per share in earnings compared to the Zacks Consensus estimate of 10 cents.?

The Israeli internet company saw year over year sales growth of almost 36% on $77.8 million in total 2011 sales and a Quarterly sales increase of roughly 10%.? They are currently trading at 45 times forward earnings.

Moving Forward
Earnings have finally moved into positive territory for ALLT. Expectations are for the company to earn 10 cents when they report quarterly earnings on May 8th (est). Analyst targets have been steady over the past month or so.? Zacks Analysts also rate the stock as a strong buy.?

For those who are open to more speculative investments, ALLT may be a company to watch.

Currently trading around $22.75 per share, ALLT has outpaced the S&P 500 by 37.5% over the past year and outperformed the broad market by over 20% in the past month alone.?

Volume is on the light side, but the stock remains firmly above its 50 and 200 day moving averages of $18.23 and $15.46 respectively.

Harley created a lifestyle and in my mind, they were the original social network.? Harley owners and other bikers shared a common thread that transcended culture, social status, gender and ethnicity.?? Over the past two decades, Harley has expanded its appeal beyond the middle class biker circles that made it famous.? Yuppies and younger, hipper, trendier buyers have stepped up and put a Harley in their garage. ?If you look at the prices of their bikes and accessories, it?s a wonder that the middle class could ever afford one.? For a diehard Harley fan and owner like me, one has to wonder what the effect will be on the Harley lineup with Willie G. gone.? I think that they will not only continue to produce quality and consistency in their machines, but perhaps now will begin to explore some unique designs that are still true Harleys at heart.

Fads come and go, but Harley remains tried and true to its roots in many ways.? You may have a chopper, bobber or custom bike, but for most of us who ride, especially long distances; there is nothing like a Harley. I believe their international story is one to watch as is the fact that the ?chopper? fads are fading, steering more customers to Harley?s new, aggressive designs.?

Cost Plus ?(CPWM)
Cost Plus (aka World Market) operates 258 stores nationwide that offer an eclectic mix of everything from exotic (but economical) furnishings to cookware and foods from around the world. ?

Last time CPWM hit the Zacks Rank #1 buy list on January 24, 2011 it was a $12 dollar stock; ?fast forward less than two months and the shares are up 50%, now trading close to $18 after hitting a 5 year high of $18.66.

In January my focus was on World Market?s unique positioning, growth prospects and expansion. I also saw analysts moving their estimates higher ahead of the earnings report which can be one of the best indicators if a stock is going to maintain momentum.

George Zimmerman's Brother: Medical Records Will Prove Attack By Trayvon Martin

George Zimmerman's brother Robert spoke on Piers Morgan Tonight Thursday to say that George is innocent, his life was in danger after Trayvon Marin attacked him violently, and that medical records will prove his brother's injuries were real.

Robert Zimmerman Jr. spoke to CNN last night, saying he wanted to correct some of the "mythology" and untruths that have been spread about the case.

"We're confident the medical records are going to explain all of George's medical history," Robert Jr. said. "His nose is swollen in that video. I'm his brother."

George Zimmerman, a neighborhood watch volunteer, said he shot Trayvon Martin in self defense after the teen attacked him the night of February 26.

Martin, 17, was walking through the gated community back to the house of his father's fiancee, was wearing a hoodie in the rain and was unarmed.

Sanford, Fla., authorities say Zimmerman has not been charged because there are no grounds to disprove his account that he acted in self defense.

Critics say Zimmerman, who is half Hispanic, racially profiled Martin, who was black.

The shooting of Martin has sparked an intense national debate about race, leading to widespread debate. It was even addressed by President Barack Obama.

Like the POTUS, Robert Zimmerman Jr. also called the shooting a tragedy, however, he warned that some of the responses by the media and public have shown bias against Zimmerman and degraded the memory of the deceased.

"This is a tragedy. Her son was lost," he said. "I feel very badly about that and I want, in the end, not for [Martin's] memory to be seen as how we degraded our system and turned it into mob rule and went into a hate speech."

"Ultimately, we all wish that this was a different situation."

Wednesday, Zimmerman's father, Robert Sr., said that Martin threatened to kill him, broke his nose and beat him so badly to the point where his son had no choice but to act in self-defense. Robert Jr. told the same story.

"You return force with force when somebody assaults you. George was out of breath, he was barely conscious. There would have been George dead if he had not acted decisively and instantaneously in that moment when he was being disarmed."

Martin's family and legal experts have questioned the Zimmerman's family version after the recent release of surveillance videos from Sanford police HQ.

The George Zimmerman police video shows him with his hands cuffed, exiting a patrol car and being led into the police station. The video does not provide close-ups, but also does not show clear signs of injuries on Zimmerman.

Obviously it's pure speculation, but I have a hard time believing this would mitigate any punishment Bales receives. It would be a nightmare of the most extreme order for the military should Bales be exculpated, even in the most limited sense. The Afghans have been screaming for him to be tried under Afghan law. It would be hard enough to punishment short of the death penalty to the Afghan public, much less an outcome that ends with him in psychiatric care first. This is just one more massive headache in a case that can't be over for the Pentagon fast enough.

In the mean time, expect relations to continue to deteriorate between Afghan security forces and ISAF troops. There is real danger of this review fueling conspiracy theories and sparking further knife-in-the-back attacks on ISAF troops like we've already seen.

It increasingly seems that no one is winning from this war. Afghan civilians have had any sense that westerners provide safety shattered. Westerners trust their Afghan counterparts even less. And yet most of Afghan development depends on the industry that supports the international presence there, which a hasty pull-out would destroy. What's the least bad option here?

World News - US: North Korea using hackers; food aid suspended ...

WASHINGTON -- North Korea has added sophisticated cyber attack capabilities to its arsenal of threatening weapons and this year is rife with opportunities for military provocations from Pyongyang, senior U.S. defense officials said on Wednesday.

The officials told the House of Representatives Armed Services Committee that North Korea's large conventional military, nuclear weapons programs, ballistic missiles and newer capabilities in cyber warfare were all threats to the United States and its allies in the Asia-Pacific region.

Army Gen. James Thurman, the commander of U.S. Forces Korea, told the panel that a skilled team of hackers was the newest addition to North Korea's arsenal of weapons that also includes chemical and biological weapons.

"Such attacks are ideal for North Korea, providing the regime a means to attack South Korean and U.S. interests without attribution, and have been increasingly employed against a variety of targets including military, governmental, educational and commercial institutions," he said in prepared comments.

Thurman, who leads the 28,000 U.S. troops in South Korea, told the panel that the power transfer following the death in December of leader Kim Jong Il "appears to be proceeding without discernible internal challenges and with significant Chinese political and economic support."

Kim's untested son, Kim Jong Un, estimated to be 28 years old, has eased into power surrounded by allies of his father with so far "no indications the regime will depart significantly from Kim Jong Il's policies," said Thurman.

Peter Lavoy, acting assistant secretary of defense for Asia and Pacific Security Affairs, told the panel the potential for provocations from North Korea in 2012 was a "major concern" of the Pentagon.

From the U.S. perspective, the first provocation will be a North Korean ballistic missile launch slated for between April 12-16. But South Korean elections in April and December might also tempt Pyongyang to take actions to influence Seoul's domestic politics, he said.

Pyongyang says the rocket to be launched to mark what would have been the 100th birthday of deceased state founder Kim Il Sung will carry a weather satellite into orbit. But most outsiders say it is a disguised test of a long-range missile that violates key U.N. Security Council resolutions that ban any such launches.

Food aid suspended
"This planned launch is highly provocative because it manifests North Korea's desire to test and expand its long-range missile capability," said Lavoy. He said the announcement of the launch also broke a missile moratorium North Korea agreed to on Feb. 29 with Washington in exchange for food aid.

According to the BBC, Lavoy said next month's planned rocket launch "reflects [North Korea's] lack of desire to follow through on their international commitments and so we've been forced to suspend our activities to provide nutritional assistance."

The US has not delivered food aid to North Korea since 2009, BBC reported, but it sent officials to the country's ally China earlier this month to finalize plans for renewed food deliveries totaling 240,000 tons.

North Korea relies on foreign aid to feed its people, BBC reported. The country has been struggling with food shortages since a famine in the 1990s.

Many of North Korea's neighbors are concerned about next month's launch of a rocket, which North Korea has said would travel southward toward the Philippines or Indonesia, said Lavoy.

"I don't know if we have any confidence on the stability of the missile or what the impact will be," he said.

The missile launch next month has put on hold diplomatic efforts to coax North Korea back into talks over its nuclear weapons programs that have been frozen for three years.

Pyongyang often shifts tactics between diplomacy and confrontation, said Thurman.

"History tells us that Pyongyang will shift from diplomatic to provocative behavior when conventional diplomacy has run its course and the North Korean leadership perceives coercive diplomacy offers a better chance to realize its objectives," he said.

Slime mold mimics Canadian highway network

ScienceDaily (Mar. 26, 2012) ? Queen's University professor Selim Akl has provided additional proof to the theory that nature computes.

Dr. Akl (School of Computing) placed rolled oats on a map of Canada, covering the major urban areas. One urban area held the slime mold. The slime mold reached out for the food, creating thin tubes that eventually formed a network mirroring the Canadian highway system.

"By showing species as low as slime mold can compute a network as complex as the Canadian highway system, we were able to provide some evidence that nature computes," says Dr. Akl.

Moving forward, Dr. Akl would like to collect more examples to support his claim that nature computes. He explains, for example, that the leaf of a plant uses 99 per cent of the light it receives from the sun while the best engineered solar cells have an efficiency of only 35 per cent. Research into this area could lead to important practical applications.

Dr. Akl's study, co-authored by Andrew Adamatzky (University of the West of England, United Kingdom) is being published in the International Journal of Natural Computing Research and he is also serving on the program committee of a natural computing conference being held in Spain later this year.
