A $30M gift to University | Harvard Gazette

Harvard University announced today that the Hutchins Family Foundation (HFF), which was endowed by Glenn Hutchins ?77, J.D. ?83, M.B.A. ?83, has given the University $30 million.

The gift will support academic initiatives in the Faculty of Arts and Sciences (FAS) and also launch the Hutchins Family Challenge Fund for House Renewal. The challenge fund will award matching gifts to alumni and friends interested in supporting the revitalization of Harvard?s undergraduate House system through naming opportunities.

For Hutchins ? a longtime University supporter and co-founder of Silver Lake, one of the world?s largest firms investing in technology companies ? this gift illustrates his belief in the fundamental role of House life in Harvard?s undergraduate experience. Hutchins serves as an FAS campaign co-chair.

?When Harvard alumni are introduced for the first time, the first question they ask is not ?Which year?? but, rather, ?Which House?? ? Hutchins said. ?Graduates of the College all know the vital role the Houses played in their lives as students.

?But this donation is not about our fondly remembered undergraduate days or even historic preservation ? it is about the future. The renovation of these magnificent buildings will enable Harvard to do for future generations what it did for us. Perhaps most important, it underscores Harvard?s commitment to offer an undergraduate experience which is the best among its peers.?

Drew Faust, Harvard?s president and Lincoln Professor of History, praised Hutchins for his philanthropy and commitment over the years. ?This extraordinarily generous gift exemplifies Glenn?s leadership and dedication to Harvard,? Faust said. ?Glenn is a University citizen, but he possesses a great passion for the College and is committed to providing an unparalleled undergraduate education. Because of his efforts to create this challenge fund, we are another step closer to strengthening one of our most cherished traditions. I join the entire Harvard community in extending my gratitude to Glenn and his family.?

FAS Dean Michael D. Smith, John H. Finley Jr. Professor of Engineering and Applied Sciences, saluted Hutchins for embracing Harvard?s vision for House renewal. ?The House system is the cornerstone of the undergraduate experience at Harvard,? he said. ?It?s the place where Harvard College students, graduate students, and faculty live, work, and learn together, delivering a University experience on a human scale. As a former resident of Winthrop House, Glenn understands the transformative power of the House system and the powerful role it can play for 21st-century teaching and learning models.?

In the 1920s, Harvard College created a unique system of residential education for undergraduates centered on 12 Houses, home today to 98 percent of the College?s student population. Each House is presided over by a Harvard faculty member and by a staff of scholars and graduate students, all of whom live and work alongside the undergraduates. The House system is designed to represent the larger University in a more manageable, personal size, where College services are readily accessible to students. It also creates smaller, inclusive communities where peers of different backgrounds can interact and where informal interaction among undergraduates, faculty, and other scholars and professionals is encouraged. The system provides an enriching residential community ? culturally, intellectually, and socially.

Nearly a century later, Harvard?s undergraduate Houses are beginning a process of renewal, both physically and programmatically. The FAS and the College unveiled plans to revitalize the Houses this past July. Moving forward, the buildings will feature new physical structures ? from ?smart? classrooms and study nooks to new social spaces and music/art practice rooms ? that support and further Harvard?s extraordinary residential programming. While meeting the needs of today?s students, the project will also preserve each House?s historic character.

In addition to creating New York?based Silver Lake, Hutchins is chairman of the board of SunGard Corp. and is a director of the NASDAQ OMX Group Inc. and Mercury Payment Systems.

He served former President Bill Clinton as a member of his presidential transition team and in the White House as a special adviser on economic and health care policy. He is a director of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, vice chairman of the board of the Brookings Institution, and a trustee of New York?Presbyterian Hospital. He is also an owner and member of the executive committee of the Boston Celtics.

Hutchins is a director of Harvard Management Company and chairman of the National Advisory Board of the W.E.B. Du Bois Institute at Harvard. His gift will support Harvard?s long-term mission as planning continues for an eventual University-wide capital campaign. Harvard expects a late 2013 launch, though the timing is not finalized.

Google cameras map popular Grand Canyon trails

6 hrs.

Google and its street-view cameras already have taken users to narrow cobblestone alleys in Spain using a tricycle, inside?the Smithsonian with a push?cart and to British Columbia's snow-covered slopes by snowmobile.

The search giant now has brought its all-seeing eyes ? mounted for the first time on a backpack ? down into the Grand Canyon, showcasing the attraction's most popular hiking trails on the South Rim and other walkways.

It's the latest evolution in mapping technology for the Mountain View, Calif., company, which has used a rosette of cameras to photograph thousands of cities and towns in dozens of countries for its Street View feature. With a click of the mouse, Internet users are transported virtually for a 360-degree view of locales they may have read about only in tourist books and seen in flat, 2-D images.

"Any of these sort of iconic, cultural, historical locations that are not accessible by road is where we want to go," said Ryan Falor, product manager at Google.

Google announced the trekker earlier this year but made its first official collection of data this week at the Grand Canyon.

The backpacks aren't ready for volunteer use, but Google has said it wants to deploy them at national forests, to the narrow streets of Venice, Mount Everest and to ancient ruins and castles.

The move to capture the Grand Canyon comes after Apple chose to drop Google Maps from its mobile operating systems and opted to use its own mapping program that was derided for, among other things, poor directions and missing towns.

Steve Silverman, operations manager for Google didn't directly address the competition in saying: "Just trying to document a trail, it's going to be hard to beat this."

Google launched its Street View feature in 2007 and has expanded from five U.S. cities to more than 3,000 in 43 countries. Google teams and volunteers have covered more than 5 million miles with the Street View vehicles on a scale that other companies haven't approached, said Mike Dobson, president of Telemapics, a company that monitors mapping efforts.

"You could safely say that it's a standout, well-used application and they don't really have any competition," he said.

As the sun rose Monday, Luc Vincent, Google engineering director, strapped on one of the 40-pound backpacks and set down the Bright Angel Trail to the Colorado River ? a nearly 10-mile hike that goes from 6,900 feet in elevation to 2,400 feet. He hiked back up from Phantom Ranch, which can be 30 degrees warmer than at the rim, through the South Kaibab Trail and also gathered data on other trails.

The so-called trekker captures images every 2.5 seconds with 15 cameras that are 5 megapixels each from the rest areas, the steep switchbacks, the change from juniper trees to scrub brush and the traffic that moves aside as a courtesy to mule riders.

The GPS data is limited, so Google must compensate with sensors that record temperature, vibrations and the orientation of the device as it changes, before it?stitches?the images together and makes them available to users in a few months, Falor said.

Hikers that were on the trail when the data was gathered will have their faces blurred ? an attempt by Google to ensure privacy. Street View has run into problems in places like Europe and Australia for scooping up information transmitted over unsecured wireless networks.

A removable hard drive on the trekker stores the data gathered at the Grand Canyon. Tourists looked at the trekker strangely this week, as if it was something from outer space.

Sharon Kerfoot, a first-time visitor from Alberta said being able to view the terrain ahead of time, gauge the difficulty of the hike and know just how wide the path is would benefit those considering a trip to the Grand Canyon. She and a group of friends headed down the same path as Vincent but on mules, not foot.

"I think it's an excellent idea to give people a broader perspective on what they're getting into," she said.

What the images won't tell visitors is how much water they should carry down the trails, how to prepare for temperature changes, what type of food to bring and how much, and how best to protect the natural resources, park spokeswoman Maureen Oltrogge said.

"Stitched together with other information out there, the technology could be valuable," she said.

Keep Things Moving with Our Guide to Healthy Bowels! | Gnet ...

Having a healthy digestive system is really important to making sure we get the nutrients our body needs. When we eat the right foods, they move through our digestive system in a healthy and consistent manner, and we have regular bowel movements. These movements can vary from person to person; for some people it is every day, for others it is several times a week. Whatever your movements are, you should notice a certain regularity to them. Sometimes though, your body?s natural rhythm is disrupted.

This could be due to a change in diet, or even a change in your surroundings that you?re not entirely comfortable with. Whatever the reason, this disruption may result in a bout of constipation, lasting from a few days to a few weeks! Most of the time, the constipation will correct itself, and shouldn?t be a great cause for concern. However, if it doesn?t resolve and is left untreated, constipation can be a real problem, and lead to painful stomach cramps, hemorrhoids, yeast infections, and even depression!

If you think you are suffering from chronic constipation, then we do recommend seeing your doctor as a first course of action, since occasionally it may be a symptom of an underlying illness. However, if you have established that is just a matter of your lifestyle affecting your bowel health, then we can offer you some healthy tips, to keep your digestive health at its peak!

  1. When You?ve Got to Go, You?ve Got to Go!
This is really important; when you feel the urge to go to the toilet, then go! If you suppress those urges, you are training your body to ignore them altogether! This will throw your whole system out of its routine, and encourage the onset of constipation. Listen to your body, and do what it is telling you to do!
  1. Drink Lots of Water!
By staying hydrated, you are making sure your stools stay soft, and easy to pass through the body. When you are not drinking enough water, your stools will become hard, making them difficult and painful to pass. It?s such an easy change to make, but it may fix all your bowel problems!
  1. Cleanse your Colon with Natural Supplements!
We recommend Bowtrol, which is not only proven to relieve constipation, but it also eases painful bloating, and contains probiotics, to support the friendly bacteria in your guts that contribute heavily to your health! Visit www.bowtrol.com to see the range of products that could provide a natural solution to your bowel problems.
  1. Eat Lots of Fibre!
Fibre contributes towards your bowel health in several ways. Firstly, it makes the texture of your stools slightly rougher, which make them easier for the walls of the intestines to grip and move along. And also, it absorbs water into your stools, which makes them softer and easier to pass. If you are suffering from constipation, try adding more fibre to your diet, and you may be surprised at how quickly it relieves your problem! Fibre is found in wholegrain foods, vegetables and fruit, which are also great for your health in so many other ways too!
  1. Exercise!
You may not have ever made the link between exercising and your bowel health before, but there is a valuable one!! Exercising stimulates your metabolism, and helps kick-start your digestive system when it?s behaving sluggishly. Try to get in 30 minutes of exercise at least 3 times a week; you?ll quickly start to notice the difference it makes!

Google results miss; shares dive after premature report

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Google Inc's quarterly results fell well short of Wall Street's expectations after its core advertising business slowed, stunning investors accustomed to consistently rapid growth from the Internet giant and wiping more than 9 percent off its market value.

The disappointing numbers on Thursday came hours ahead of schedule in a rare instance of premature filing. Google blamed the misfire on an unauthorized filing by its financial printers, RR Donnelley & Sons Co, and later confirmed the numbers' accuracy. (Read about the filing process exposure http://in.reuters.com/article/2012/10/18/google-earning-error-donnelley-idINDEE89H0FV20121018)

The earnings report, which had not been expected until after the market close, revealed a weakening in Google's core Internet advertising business and persistent losses at its recently acquired cellphone business, Motorola Mobility.

Shares of Google, the world's No. 1 Internet search engine, finished Thursday's regular trading session down 8 percent at $695 after a brief trading halt. Some analysts said the inadvertent results release spurred confusion and exacerbated its stock price decline.

Google executives maintained in a conference call on Thursday that the company's various businesses continued to benefit from healthy growth and that Google was well-positioned to capitalize on consumer's increasing use of mobile devices.

Chief Executive Larry Page, speaking on his first earnings call since an unspecified voice ailment sidelined him from public speaking in June, said that Google's mobile business was now generating revenue at an annualized run rate of $8 billion.

Page acknowledged that mobile ad rates were below the rates that Google garners for ads that appear on its standard website. But he said the variety of Web-connected devices used by consumers is creating "a huge new universe of opportunities for advertisers."

"We're uniquely positioned to get through that transition and to really profit from it," Page said, citing Google's Android mobile software, the world's top operating system for smartphones by market share.

Google, which has been struggling to turn around a Motorola Mobility hardware business it bought for $12.5 billion, reported a 20 percent dive in net income to $2.18 billion. Excluding certain items, it earned $9.03 a share, vastly underperforming the $10.65 analysts had expected, on average.

"We have been saying this thing was ripe for a pullback. It's not like they're Google not being Google, but you still have some major issues," said BCG analyst Colin Gillis.

"Click prices declined for the fourth consecutive quarter after rising for eight consecutive quarters before then. That's a negative. This is the mobile problem."

"The other bit is the Motorola millstone had been ignored by the market, and - boom - now you've got weak revenue from Motorola. When you acquire a business and you're about to whack all kinds of people and close offices, you know what happens to the employees? They take their eye off the ball. Sales are down," Gillis explained.

Net revenue growth at Google's main Internet business increased 17 percent year-over-year, the first time growth in that business has fallen below 20 percent since 2009. Google Finance Chief Patrick Pichette stressed on the conference call that the revenue growth rate was higher if the impact of foreign currency exchange rates was backed out.

"It was just too rapid a deceleration," said Pivotal Research Group analyst Brian Wieser. "Many of the same underlying trends drive Facebook advertising."

Shares of Facebook Inc , which headed south shortly after Google's inadvertent filing, closed down 4.6 percent. Google's snafu recalled Facebook's debut, which was marred by technical glitches that also spooked traders and contributed to the stock's first-day decline.

The decline in Google's shares come after a three-month run-up in its stock, which reached an all-time high of $774.38 earlier this month.

Chart: bad day for Google: http://link.reuters.

A BAD MISS?

Google reported net revenue - excluding traffic acquisition costs - of $11.3 billion for the third quarter, below Wall Street's expectations for about $11.9 billion.

For the fourth consecutive quarter, the company reported a decline in average cost-per-click (CPC), a critical metric that denotes the price advertisers pay Google.

Average CPC declined 15 percent from a year ago and 3 percent from the second quarter of this year. Analysts say that Google, like many of its peers in the Internet industry, has been struggling to adapt to the rapid consumer uptake in mobile devices. Advertisers pay far less for ads on smartphones and tablets than for similar ads on desktop computers.

"The core business seems to have slowed down pretty significantly, which is shocking," said B. Riley analyst Sameet Sinha. "The only conclusion I can look at is, search is happening more and more outside of Google, meaning people are searching more through apps than through Google search."

"That could indicate a secular change, especially when it comes to ecommerce searches. The big fear has always been, what if people decide just to go straight to Amazon and do their searches? And potentially that's what could be happening."

But Ryan Jacob, chairman and chief investment officer of Jacob Funds, said he viewed Google's results as only "minorly disappointing," with most of the weakness coming from Motorola as expected.

"Unfortunately, by dropping an 8K in the middle of a trading day, people kind of shoot first, ask questions later," said Jacob, whose fund owns Google shares.

JP Morgan analyst Doug Anmuth said in a note that the Google results were "light" but not as bad as they appeared at "first blush."

FILING SNAFU

Google, which recently overtook Microsoft Corp to become the second-largest U.S. technology company by capitalization, had been due to release its results after the market close.

The second paragraph of the press release merely read "Pending Larry quote," suggesting that space was reserved for comment from CEO Larry Page.

"Earlier this morning RR Donnelley, the financial printer, informed us that they had filed our draft 8K earnings statement without authorization," Google said in a statement. "We have ceased trading on NASDAQ while we work to finalize the document. Once it's finalized we will release our earnings, resume trading on NASDAQ and hold our earnings call as normal at 1:30 PM PT."

Shares of RR Donnelley, the U.S. printing services company, slid as much as 5 percent. They closed down 1 percent at $10.76.

Reed Kathrein, a plaintiff lawyer with Hagens Berman who sues companies on behalf of investors, said investors would not have a claim against either Google or RR Donnelley because the earnings disclosure was likely a mistake.

"There's no fraudulent intent here," Kathrein said.

However, Google could have a negligence claim against RR Donnelly to recover any additional costs it incurred in responding to the incident, Kathrein added.

"Everyone is trying to figure out if there's any legal issue with respect to RR Donnelley," said Michael Matousek, senior trader at U.S. Global Investors Inc, which manages about $3 billion in San Antonio.

Viewers riveted by feisty presidential debate

At the University of Cincinnati, 200 students were expected to turn out to watch the second debate between Barack Obama and Mitt Romney.

But organizers hadn't reckoned on the intense curiosity as to how the president would perform after an admittedly lackluster showing in the first faceoff. The students kept coming, and row upon row of chairs were added at the campus center until more than 500 crammed in. It was not unlike a crowd at a boxing match; many were expecting verbal fireworks, and they weren't disappointed.

"It goes without saying that the knives were out," said Karim Aladmi, a 21-year-old international affairs major from Dayton, Ohio, who wore a suit and tie for the occasion.

"I thought Obama had a strong performance, but Romney made him work for it," Aladmi said. "I was actually impressed by both sides."

Across the nation, interest in Tuesday night's debate was high. Assessments varied enormously, and not everyone was satisfied with the give and take.

"I thought it was a very sloppy debate," said Joe Blizzard, 22, a chemical engineering major from Dayton. "They spent a lot of time cutting down the other person. As someone who is undecided, it was a little disappointing."

In Florida, another critical swing state. Romney supporters at a beer house in Coral Gables laughed and hooted when Obama brought up Big Bird ? the public television character ostensibly endangered by proposed Romney budget cuts. And when Obama mentioned how he was raised by a single mother, one Romney backer exclaimed, "Oh, God. Here we go again."

At a nearby coffee shop, Obama supporter Cheryl Lyons watched the debate live on her laptop while wearing headphones. She described Romney as a "chameleon,"

"He doesn't know what he wants to be," she said. "I think Romney is trying to win young people and women. But I also think he says what people want to hear."

At a Coral Gables sports bar, 84-year-old Roberto Francois Carranta said he remained firmly for Romney, depicting him as "the next Reagan." The Obama administration, said Carranta, "is the greatest insult which has ever been perpetrated on the American public."

Romney supporters dominated at a debate-watch party at a casino in battleground Nevada that offered special drinks with political names and a debate-related drinking game.

While some in the crowd at John Ascuaga's Nugget hotel-casino in Sparks watched the debate intently, others caught an occasional glimpse while occupied at slot machines and blackjack tables.

Jerry Frey, 60, a third-generation Nevadan who got his start flying crop dusters and now has a small agribusiness, cheered on Romney and hollered at Obama, "You're taking our freedom away."

"People are realizing Obama is all talk, a good talker, a good speaker," he said later. "After four years, I trust Romney more."

Ballard Larsen, a retired union worker from Sparks, described the debate as "pretty much a draw" but said he came away leaning toward Romney because of the Republican Party's stance against new gun-control laws.

"I'm a union guy and Democrats are pro-union and Republicans are not, so I always give Democrats the edge because that's how I make my money," Larsen said. "But then again, I'm a 2nd Amendment guy and the Republicans are more pro-2nd Amendment and the Democrats are not."

In Colorado, another swing state, viewers included Robert Loevy, professor emeritus of political science at Colorado College in Colorado Springs.

He rated the debate "largely a tie, with both candidates speaking effectively but also speaking past each other."

"If that is the case, then Obama is the winner because he needed to make up for his poor performance in debate No. 1," said Loevy, who expects the race to remain close both nationwide and in Colorado.

Professor David Key, director of Baptist Studies at Emory University's Candler School of Theology in Atlanta, also suggested that Obama made up for his lapse in the first debate as he and Romney vied for middle-of-the road voters.

"It got tense and testy at times," Key said in an email. "When they were too aggressive with each other, it fires up their bases but alienates the undecided from the whole political process."

Emma Coleman Jordan, a Georgetown University law professor, said Obama "completely dominated this debate" while underscoring his fundamental differences with Romney.

"Gov. Romney continued to practice the art of smoke and anecdote to get away from a direct answer on a difficult question where his underlying position was unpopular," Jordan said.

Back at the University of Cincinnati, international affairs student Sierra Faler, 20, had been hoping Obama would improve from the first debate ? and said she got her wish.

"He really came off more, for lack of a better word, aggressively, which is good," she said. "He was able to handle Romney very well, who I felt was more scrapping to find things to counteract him."

Sean Flynn, 19, a mechanical engineering major from the Cleveland area, enjoyed the back-and-forth enthusiasm in the big crowd, and said he came away with his support for Romney reinforced.

"President Obama didn't really answer many questions directly. I was pleased with Romney's answers," he said. "I think the polls are going to be close in the swing states. It could result in a very entertaining third debate."

Gasoline demand dips as prices rise

NEW YORK (Reuters) - U.S. gasoline demand fell last week, compared with a year earlier, as a sharp uptick in southern California gasoline prices raised the average price motorists paid across the nation, a biweekly report from MasterCard showed on Tuesday.

Gasoline demand last week fell 3.9 percent from a year earlier, on top of its 2.4 percent decline, year-over-year, in the previous week, MasterCard's report showed.

On average, demand over the two weeks ending October 12 fell 3.1 percent lower than a year ago.

The average price of a gallon rose 4.00 cents-a-gallon to $3.82, 11.7 percent higher than in the same week last year. This followed a sharp, 31-cent rise in southern California pump prices over the last two weeks, after refinery outages created a severe supply shortage there.

MasterCard's data also showed that the four-week moving average for demand fell 2.1 percent last week. In week-to-week terms, demand first dropped by 1.7 percent in the week to October 5 then rose by 0.7 percent last week, the report showed.

MasterCard Advisors, a unit of MasterCard Inc, estimates retail gasoline demand based on aggregate sales in the MasterCard payments system, coupled with estimates for other payment forms, including cash and checks.

Earlier this year, MasterCard changed the frequency of its report from weekly to every other week.

Great Ideas On Dorm Room Decoration : Home Improvement

You are here: Home / General / Great Ideas On Dorm Room Decoration

One of the best things you can do in the beginning to feel more comfortable in your surroundings is to make your dorm room feel more like home. The dorm room is where students spend most of their time outside of class. Decorations will help make your place more comfortable and will let students feel at home even if their hometowns are miles away. One can also visit http://www.reidtechnology.co.nz/ for the related information.

Walls are one area of the room where students can do a lot of things to please the eyes or even make over the entire room. While painting and wallpaper aren?t usually allowed in dorm rooms or rentals, you can put up things like mosaic pictures, picture frames, and movie or music posters to help make the space more your own. Check the homestoreonline for more home decoration materials.

A mirror is another great choice because you don?t have to wait for the bathroom and it also has the effect of making the room seem bigger. Any wall hanging is a clever way to cover dirty spots or holes on the walls. Another idea is a cork board or white board. Having cork boards or white boards are helpful to remind students about schedules and project deadlines but they are also great ways to express yourself with photos of friends and fun times.

Multi-purpose decorations are also great. Items that are useful for more than one purpose help you save a lot of space. One example is a multi-purpose table where you can either eat your meal or study at night. Bonus points if it has drawers or a shelf underneath for storing your belongings. Another useful piece is a small plastic filing cabinet or box where you can put your books or video game or CDs. Some of these even lock if you have some private or valuable possessions that you don?t want subjected to your roommate?s prying eyes.

What?s more, a curtain is another item which is a must-have in every dorm room. It?ll help manipulate the light entering your room. College students often have erratic schedules. If you need to take a nap during the day or plan to sleep in after a long night out, you?ll want to block the sun?s rays from entering your room and disturbing your slumber. You can find many decorative items that match your d?cor and this is something that even the most different of roommates can reach an agreement about. Lingerie Wall Graphics Are A Excellent Gift For That Special Person

My girlfriend gave me a absolutely great gift the other day for my birthday. I have never had such a exciting gift before. My girlfriend gave me a life size wall graphic of her in lingerie. It was a special gift I will always remember.

My girlfriend did not go to a professional photographer to do her lingerie pictures. Instead she had a female friend take the pictures with a digital point and shoot camera she purchased at the local electronic store for under $100.00. My girlfriend had done some research for the project and she discovered that a minimum of a 5 megabyte digital photo was required for the sign company to make her wall graphic. After a little shopping around, she found a 12 megabyte digital point and shoot camera for under 50 dollars. The camera offered several additional features of cropping, background, picture timers, etc. Also, there are no pesky batteries to replace. The camera comes with a lithium battery and a charger.

With the money that my girlfriend saved on the digital camera, she purchased other lingerie articles that she promises to show me at a later date. I am looking forward to that.

The life size wall graphic is made out of a special material that allows it to be put up on a wall and taken down several times. This space age material will allow the lingerie graphic to be taken down without losing its sticky adherence in case guests coming to visit. This means the parents ! I certainly do not want them seeing my girlfriend in lingerie on my wall. Simply cleaning techniques allow the graphic to be used over and over again. It is recommended that you wipe down the wall with a cloth and water before applying your graphic. This will make sure the graphic does not pick up any dirt or dust so it maintains its ability to adhere to your wall.

The graphics I am told are printed with eco solvent inks so that means they are environmentally friendly. With proper cleaning, they will last a very long time. Thats important because I really want to keep seeing my girlfriend. She is totally comfortable with her being on the wall because she knows she is always knows I am on her mind.

If you want to give a great gift for your birthday, you should choose a lingerie wall graphic. It will show that you care about him and he will be very proud of it.

Home Remedy Tips For Treating Painful Hemorrhoids

the majority of people will develop hemorrhoids at one point or another

Add a bit of lemon to any water you drink; this can help relieve the hemorrhoid pain you may be experiencing. Lemon offers soothing properties and can lessen any irritation caused by hemorrhoids. If you want to feel better during the day, try drinking lemon water.

Straining is a leading cause of both new hemorrhoids, and worsening of existing hemorrhoids. If increasing your fiber intake does not make passing stool easier, try placing a stepstool under your feet while on the toilet. This helps elevate your knees into a squatting position, which can align your body and make it simpler to pass your bowel.

Take a comfortable pillow with you if you're planning on sitting for any length of time. It may draw a bit much attention at work, but in other places, such as at home or in the car, it may be just what you need to make your life less painful.

Donut cushions can offer great relief, if you are experiencing hemorrhoids. The shape is specially designed to provide comfort for hemorrhoid suffers. Some are like a pillow, others are inflatable. You sit on this cushion, and you will then be much more comfortable and relaxed than just sitting elsewhere without the added cushioning.

Using enemas can decrease hemorrhoid pain. You can take two garlic cloves, and then cut them up and place them in a few cups of boiling water for around a half an hour. Allow the water to cool down. Then, when it's at room temperature, use the water to provide yourself with an enema once per day.

If you don't get enough fruit and vegetables in your regular diet, it is important to take a daily fiber supplement. These supplements should be spread out during the day, and you need to make sure you drink plenty of water.

Sometimes people over complicate hemorrhoid prevention, and forget that there is an easy way to prevent hemorrhoids. Use the restroom as soon as you feel the need. The more time your stool spends in your large intestine, the more water will be reabsorbed by your body, which means that it will get harder and harder and you will have to strain more to defecate. This type of strain and pressure is linked to formation of hemorrhoids.

One home remedy for hemorrhoids is the use of olive oil. Olive oil has been known to alleviate the discomfort of hemorrhoids and reduce their swelling. However, you shouldn't use this on anything except external hemorrhoids. Avoid using the oil to treat internal hemorrhoids.

If you know why hemorrhoids happen and what they are, it will help you deal with them better. Get all the information you can if you or a relative has been diagnosed with this nasty illness. Basically, a hemorrhoid is a bundle of swollen and sensitive nerves.

One way to deal with hemorrhoids is to attempt to gently push the hemorrhoid back into the anus. You could slip them inside if your hemorrhoids aren't very large. This will stop them from rubbing into your clothing and it will minimize possible injury. If they hurt or are too big, do not try this and risk injury.

As previously mentioned, the majority of people will develop hemorrhoids at one point or another, and many of them will have to deal with recurring flare-ups. By eating a healthy

and exercising regularly you should be able to avoid this condition entirely.

Obama campaign seeks to reassure nervous Democrats

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Democrats aren't just nervous about President Barack Obama's listless debate performance. One month from Election Day, supporters worry his campaign hasn't been aggressive enough in managing the fallout, and they fear losing ground with women voters.

The hand-wringing prompted Obama on Wednesday to respond directly, assuring backers, "I got this."

Party loyalists, in Washington and in battleground states, are fretting that Obama's campaign has been slow to rebound after last week's lead-off debate, which Republican Mitt Romney is widely viewed as having won. They're worried that the Democratic ticket hasn't been able to block Romney's post-debate pivot to the political center. And they fear Romney's new effort to show a softer side gives the Republican nominee an opening with female voters, who are crucial to the president's re-election prospects.

"I'm not feeling very positive," said Awilda Marquez, a prominent Democrat in Colorado. "I know that it's only the first debate, but he can't seem to change the relentless negative coverage. Romney has been able to take control."

Her nervousness was echoed by other Democrats in interviews across the country just before the next opportunity to get the Obama campaign back on track ? Vice President Joe Biden's debate Thursday against Republican Paul Ryan.

Obama's campaign, seeking to address some of the concerns, launched a fresh critique of Romney Wednesday for saying he wouldn't pursue abortion-related legislation as president. Obama aides accused the Republican of "hiding" his positions of earlier in the year in order to gain women's votes.

The president's team says no major changes are expected in his own re-election strategy. Nevertheless, the president and his aides are seeking to reassure anxious Democrats that key factors are still in their favor.

"By next week, I think a lot of the hand-wringing will be complete because we're going to go ahead and win this thing," Obama said in an interview with radio host Tom Joyner.

The president appears to maintain a narrow lead in polling in many battleground states and has more pathways than Romney to reach the 270 Electoral College votes required to win the White House. Also, more Democrats than Republicans are registered to vote in swing states like Florida and Nevada. And last Friday's dip in the nation's unemployment rate to 7.8 percent gave some credence to Obama's core argument that the economy is slowly but surely recovering.

But there's little doubt that the burst of momentum Obama enjoyed last month has come to a halt following the first debate. That's given Romney ample opportunity to rebound from a dismal September with just four weeks until Election Day and millions of Americans already casting early votes. Polls taken after the debate show the race tightening nationally and in key states, though both parties say the president maintains an edge in such crucial states as Ohio and Virginia.

The rumblings in the Democratic ranks focus largely on whether the campaign has been aggressive enough coming out of the first debate, particularly in accusing Romney of lying about his positions and abandoning the conservative policies he embraced during the GOP primary.

Several strategists said they were perplexed that the campaign, nearing $1 billion in fundraising, wasn't churning out television advertisements juxtaposing clips of Romney from earlier in the year with his comments during the debate. That's allowing Romney, they say, to get away with shifting to the center.

"I don't believe you ever let a charge go unanswered, so in that respect I wish they were more forceful," said Chuck Ardo, a former spokesman for ex-Pennsylvania Gov. Ed Rendell.

Other Democrats fear the debate fallout is leading to softening support for the president among women, long one of his strengths.

Romney is making a clear play for female voters coming out of the debate, sprinkling personal anecdotes into his speeches in an attempt to appear more empathetic. The Republican also said this week that he would not pursue any abortion-related legislation if elected.

Obama aides dispute much of the criticism of their tactics, pointing to their rapid response to Romney's apparent shift on abortion.

"We're not saying he's changed his mind on these issues," said Stephanie Cutter, Obama's deputy campaign manager. "We're saying he's trying to cover up his beliefs."

The president's support among female registered voters dropped 5 percentage points following the debate, according to Gallup surveys. But he still leads Romney 51 percent to 43 percent among women. The Republican's support among registered female voters is up 2 points since the debate.

Democratic pollster Stan Greenberg raised alarms this week about the potential for softening in Obama's support among women. He said his post-debate research found unmarried women in particular were not swayed by Obama's economic arguments but were open to Romney's approach.

"There was a positive response of these voters to Romney identifying with the middle class and their struggle and a very strong response to Romney's five-point economic plan," Greenberg said.

That marked a shift from last month, according to the pollster. Many unmarried women responded positively to Obama's message during the Democratic convention and were particularly offended by Romney's comments in a leaked fundraising video about 47 percent of voters who don't pay federal income tax and feel they are victims.

Obama never raised Romney's remarks during the debate, to the dismay of many Democrats.

The president's campaign did on Tuesday release its first ad since the debate incorporating Romney's comments on the 47 percent. The 30-second spot focused on seniors, arguing that some of the "victims" Romney referred to were seniors receiving Medicare.

Despite the Democratic worries, officials at Obama's Chicago campaign headquarters say their approach to the final weeks of the campaign has always hinged on a tight race.

"We never anticipated winning battleground states by 10 points and can't imagine winning a ton of them by 5 points," said Ben LaBolt, Obama's campaign spokesman. "Our task is to lay out the economic choice every day for undecideds and to turn out our supporters."

For some Democrats, who sensed some in the party getting overconfident before the debate, a case of the nerves may not be such a bad thing.

"I'd rather get a jolt four weeks out than a week out when there's still time to do something about this," said Karen Finney, a Democratic strategist.
