Teen charged in golf shop break-in at Charleston golf course

A teenager was arrested trying to break into a shop at the Charleston City Golf Course early Thursday morning.

An alarm went off about 12:50 a.m. indicating somebody might be in the building at 2110 Maybank Highway, according to Charleston Police spokesman Charles Francis. Officers arrived to find that an air vent on the front roof top had been broken out, and they also found clothing, a bicycle and a pill bottle. They surrounded the building and waited for the manager to arrive with a key.

When officers got inside, they heard somebody in the crawl space above the lobby, apparently trying to escape through the rear air vents, Francis said. An officer grabbed him as he tried to crawl off the roof in the back of the building.

Murphy Lopes, 17, of 446 Riverland Drive was charged with second-degree burglary and taken to the Al Cannon Detention Center, Francis said.

Perishing Pets ? Exotic Pet Study Finds Three Out Of Four Reptiles ...

Animal Protection Agency:

A new scientific study of the exotic pet trade has found that at least 75% of pet snakes, lizards, tortoises and turtles die within one year in the home. It is thought that most of these newly purchased animals, whose natural longevities range from 8-120 years according to species, die from captivity stress-related causes.

In an article in the latest issue of?The Biologist, published by the Society of Biology, scientists compared the number of reptiles that enter the UK market each year to the numbers of reptile pets that reside, year on year, in private homes. Based on these figures, the authors found that at least three quarters of reptiles perish within their first year in the home.

The study also looks into the impacts of the exotic pet trade on species populations and whole ecosystems, and the disruption caused by the release of non-native species into the environment. The trade also takes its toll on human health with an estimated 5,600 cases of reptile-related salmonellosis (just one of many animal-to-human disease threats posed by exotic pets) occurring in the UK each year.

Says Elaine Toland, Director of the Animal Protection Agency:

?The fact that most reptiles die within a year is truly tragic and is probably unresolvable because reptiles and captivity simply don?t mix. The trade in wild-caught and captive-bred lizards, snakes, tortoises and turtles is wasteful, destructive and inhumane, and even the most conscientious and well-intentioned keepers cannot realistically provide for all these animals? biological needs. The public would never tolerate three out of four dogs dying annually in the home, and nor should we tolerate such premature mortality in reptiles. A ban on this high turnover trade in ?disposable? animals is long overdue.

Says: Clifford Warwick, Biologist and Medical Scientist:

?The trading and keeping of exotic pets is responsible for decades of ecological, animal welfare and public health harm on a massive scale. Both formal regulation and enforcement, along with years of efforts at educating people about the major problems inherent to wildlife trading have fundamentally and grossly failed to control what has been a persistent and exacerbating environmental, animal welfare and human health mess. The more one looks into the exotic pet trade, the worse it gets. The only way forward is a ban on trade.?

Says Phillip Arena, Reptile Biologist, Murdoch University:

?Major threats such as habitat loss and climate change mean there is simply less wildlife out there, making human-wildlife impacts now greater than ever. The impacts of the exotic pet industry are additional burdens the world does not need.?

Apple's victory means soul-searching for Samsung

(AP) ? A U.S. jury's $1 billion verdict against Samsung for what rival Apple claimed was the illegal copying of its iPhone and iPad designs signals a turning point for the South Korean electronics giant known for its prowess in adapting the innovations of others and nimbly executing production.

The verdict not only jolted the world of global gadgetry but also likely sparked some soul-searching in Suwon, South Korea, where the family-run Samsung conglomerate is based.

The world's top seller of smartphones finds itself in the post-iPhone reality, where the decades-long practice of industry mimicry now can mean a bruising legal challenge.

And so Samsung finds itself back at the drawing board, to recreate itself as an innovator, not an imitator. But the switch, experts say, will be much more challenging and time-consuming than the shortcuts Samsung used to take.

"The case shows that Samsung is still inadequate in soft(ware) area, such as designs and patents," M.S. Hwang, a Hong Kong-based analyst at Samsung Securities, said in a commentary.

Samsung has a top-heavy command structure that centers on the founding family. At the apex is 70-year-old Lee Kun-hee, who inherited the mantle from his father, Samsung founder Lee Byung-chull, in 1987.

The strict hierarchy has enabled speedy and bold investment and swift execution. That, plus the ability to build on the innovations of others, like Sony ? has helped Samsung become the world's largest maker of televisions, memory chips, liquid crystal display panels and now smartphones.

Its path is reminiscent of many Japanese companies, like Canon and Nikon, which started out by copying European designs and then became innovators and pace-setters in the 1960s and 70s.

"It is impossible to be an innovator from the beginning," said Chang Sea-jin, a professor at National University of Singapore. "If you don't have a technology, imitating more advanced companies is the easiest way to catch up."

Samsung has long been regarded as a "fast follower" ? imitating or licensing technologies and then competing by lowering costs, improving quality and adding functions.

It overcame its belated entry into the memory chip business in 1983 with efficient mass production and investments. Today, Samsung supplies about 30 percent of the chips that go into electronic gadgets.

In the early 2000s, Samsung claimed leadership in the global television industry.

But when Apple released its cutting-edge iPhone in 2007, Samsung employees were likely too pressed to catch up to scrutinize possible patent encroachments. South Korea also has a much less strict idea about intellectual property than the U.S., Chang said, and speedy execution is highly valued at Samsung.

Still, Samsung outsold Apple this year in smartphones by offering more variety, including low-end phones for prices-conscious consumers.

Last Friday, a jury in San Jose, California, ruled that Samsung went too far in copying the iPhone and the iPad. It awarded Apple $1.05 billion, while a judge considers whether to ban sales of eight Samsung products in the U.S. Samsung has vowed to appeal.

Samsung's stocks plunged 7.5 percent in Seoul on the first trading day after the verdict, costing $12 billion in market value. Samsung has vowed to appeal, but unsuccessful legal battles against Apple in a host of other countries means that Samsung has few choices other than to create its own design identity.

In the last few years, Samsung has been investing in design, not only in mobile phones, but also in televisions and home appliances. But the results were not near the level of revolutionizing the look and feel of a consumer electronics product or the way consumers interact with technology.

Bill Fischer, a professor at International Institute for Management Development in Lausanne, Switzerland, says Samsung still has not breached the divide between itself and consumer electronics companies like Apple and Sony.

"They tend to take bigger risks regarding products brought to market, and they try to become creators of revolutionary new technologies," such as iPods, smartphones and Sony's Walkman music player, Fischer said in an email to The Associated Press. "This is a different mentality."

The choices that Samsung has made so far "are not choices conducive to growing the sort of design and customer-centricity that has long made Apple unique," he said.

That does not necessarily mean that Samsung must become another Apple. Samsung, which supplies mobile processors that work as a brain in the iPhone and the iPad, as well as displays and memory chips to Apple, reaches far and deep into the areas that Apple does not ? especially in electronics hardware manufacturing.

"Innovation does not necessarily mean an entire change. Doing better than the present and doing better than others are also innovation," said Lee Myoung-woo, who once led Samsung's consumer electronics businesses in the U.S. and is a professor at Hanyang University in Seoul.

"Even if other companies are not breaking away too far from the rules that Apple made with the iPhone, other companies can come up with product innovation in the areas that Apple didn't see," Lee said.

He cited the Galaxy Note as an example, a smartphone with an overblown screen that became popular.

3 Ways to Utilize Workplace Benefits for 529 Plans

Parents and grandparents looking for easy ways to learn about and enroll in 529 plans--higher education savings plans with tax benefits--may find answers in their employer's break room. Many companies are adding 529 plan seminars and payroll deductions to their benefits packages. More than 5,000 employers participate through Upromise Investments, Inc. programs alone.

[Take these 4 steps before opening a 529 plan.]

Here's how parents and grandparents can make the best use of 529 plan benefits through the workplace:

1. Attend and ask questions at seminars and at benefits fairs: When an employer participates in a 529 plan, a 529 plan educator will generally give an interactive, lunch-hour presentation. Janet Kottman, employed by Upromise Investments as senior institutional relationship manager for Missouri's direct 529 college savings plan, says that sometimes she gets to present two slides before she's asked to answer questions--such as "Can I save for my grandchild via payroll deduction?" and "Can I use 529 plan benefits if my child attends a trade school?"

There may be multiple meeting days to choose from for a larger workplace. For instance, Sprint offered four 529 sessions to its workforce at its Overland Park, Kan., campus in February 2012.

Normally, the plan educator is from the 529 plan of the state where employees reside. Since it's possible to select 529 plans from anywhere in the country, Kottman directs attendees to 529.com or the College Savings Plans Network website to view information on other plans.

[Learn why to consider purchasing another state's 529 plan.]

2. Bring home materials to review later: Generally, employers who participate in a 529 plan will give out materials about the plan to employees. A plan representative may also give out brochures at a benefits fair, T. Rowe Price 529 Plan Senior Product Manager Thomas Kazmierczak says.

Take plan educators' business cards so you can ask additional questions at another time, Kottman says. At benefits fairs, she says, it's hard to answer questions because she only gets seconds with each individual.

3. Utilize payroll deductions: "When employees learn that they can have the contributions made through payroll direct deposit, it gives them a sense of relief, knowing that it will be done automatically and done before their deposit is made into their checking account," Kottman says. Generally, all they need is to fill out a form, print it, and give it to the human resources or payroll office.

The payroll deduction continues indefinitely until the plan holder cancels authorization, Kazmierczak says. If a $25 contribution is set up from biweekly paychecks when a child turns 2, he or she could accumulate $10,400--not counting any earnings by his or her 18th birthday.

Parents who can no longer contribute or need to reduce the amount of the payroll deduction, can contact their payroll department, Kazmierczak says. He notes that it only takes a couple of days to cancel contributions made from a checking account. However, for the payroll deduction, he says, it may take employers one or two payroll cycles to modify the deduction.

Reyna Gobel, frequently quoted as an expert on student loans and college costs, is the author of "Graduation Debt: How To Manage Student Loans And Live Your Life" and "How Smart Students Pay for School: The Best Way to Save for College, Get the Right Loans, and Repay Debt." She has appeared on PBS's Nightly Business Report and speaks regularly at CollegeWeekLive.

Ready and Waiting | Mark Collins' Real Estate and Mortgage Blog

For I am already being poured out like a drink offering, and the time has come for my departure. I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.

Tony Scott?s Untimely Death

This week moviegoers lost a hero in the untimely death of 68-year old Tony Scott. Scott directed blockbusters as far back as Top Gun in 1986. The younger brother of Ridley Scott has directorial credits dating back to 1969 and was producing 10 films at the time of his death. It is rumored that Scott committed suicide and reports indicate the Coast Guard found a note in Scott?s car.

Despite initial reports that he was suffering from an inoperable brain cancer Scott appeared to have been in a great and happy state of mind. He had no financial worries and was happily married and excited about Top Gun 2. His family is denying the cancer rumor. In this article we review a sermon from Dr. Roger W. Thomas from the First Christian Church in Vandalia, MO that asks what would you do if you knew when you were to die.

Death and Dying

Preachers probably have conversations with a family about death and dying more than most people. Sometimes it?s about someone who has already passed and other times about someone who is dying.

In his sermon, Dr. Thomas had spoken to someone about a family member who had passed away a year or so ago. The person remarked how she had known for a couple of years that she was dying of cancer. The conversation then turned to whether it would be good or bad to know you?re dying. You would have time to prepare but some would say it?s better to go without thinking about it first. For many, knowing when death was imminent would cast a dark shadow over everything. For them it would be better just to drop dead without having to dwell on it.

But Dr. Thomas argues, ?If the truth be told ? we all know!? Human mortality is 100%. He quotes Woody Allen, ?It?s not that I?m afraid to die. I just don?t want to be there when it happens.? Dr. Thomas then adds some humor to this delicate subject. Three friends were discussing their future obituaries? One asked, ?What would you like folks to say at your wake?? One of his buddies thought for minute, ?I?d like them to say ?He was a great humanitarian who cared about his community.?? The fellow who had initiated the conversation replied, ?I?d like them to say ?He was a great husband and father who was an example for many to follow.?? The two nodded in agreement and looked to their silent buddy who without hesitation added, ?I?d like them to say ?Look, he?s moving!??

The Apostle Paul knew in advance that his days were numbered. Paul was confident in the face of death and that wasn?t by accident. Paul looked death in the face with a sense of readiness. He says, ?For I am already being poured out like a drink offering.? A drink offering was a sacrifice and both Jews and pagans were familiar with them. During the sacrifice one would approach an altar of hot coals and as a prayer or special vow was spoken pour wine over the coals. The wine instantly evaporated in a cloud of smoke and released a sweet rich fragrance. Romans often ended their meals with a drink offering. To them the drink offering marked the end of the meal as a time to move on. It also symbolized giving the last drop of glory to their gods.

Paul was saying in not so many words that the time to leave earth was close by and his life must be poured out as a sacrifice to God. While his executors thought they were taking Paul?s life, he saw his death as an offering to God. He also called his death a departure. The word he used was that used to unyoke an animal from a cart or plow. Paul chose to view death as a rest from labor. Death would release Paul from a Roman prison to a heaven palace.
Paul realized that life in this world was temporary. It was time for him to move on and Paul was ready to go home.

In looking at the past, Paul explains his readiness for death drawing an analogy from the athletic world, ?I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race.? Life can be tough. Sometimes we have to have hand-to-hand, down and dirty combat with the world, the flesh and the devil. It?s a fight. Nobody said it would be easy. But finishing well is worth the effort. The Christian life is a marathon not a sprint. You win the race by not giving up. Finishing is life?s victory. As Dr. Thomas says, ?It is not so much about how fast you go or how many you pass along the way, but do you finish well??

Paul was looking forward to his reward, ?a crown of righteousness.? In the ancient Olympic style games, a winner received as a crown a laurel wreath, whose value came from the occasion and the hand that bequeathed it. To Paul, heaven was about being in the presence of the Lord. For the lover of God, God?s presence is the ultimate reward.

A Modern Day Paul

In 1987 Paul Azinger was named the PGA player of the year. Six years later he won his only major title, the coveted PGA championship. At the age of 33 he had a remarkable ten tournament victories to his credit. The very next year Azinger was diagnosed with cancer and he wrote, ?A feeling of fear came over me. I could die from cancer. Then another reality hit me. I?m going to die anyway, whether from cancer or something else. It?s just a question of when. Golf suddenly became meaningless to me. All I wanted to do was live.?

Azinger remembered something that chaplain to the golf pros Larry Moody had told him, ?Zinger, we?re not in the land of the living going to the land of the dying. We?re in the land of the dying trying to get to the land of the living.? Thanks to six months of chemotherapy and five weeks of radiation treatment Azinger beat the cancer and returned to the PGA tour. Even though he lived a great life as a professional golfer, Azinger wrote, ?I?ve made a lot of money since I?ve been on the tour. I?ve won a lot of tournaments. But that happiness is always temporary. The only way I have ever found true contentment is in my personal relationship with Jesus Christ. I?m not saying that nothing ever bothers me and I don?t have problems, but now I?ve found the answer?the answer to the six-foot hole.?

Dr. Roger W. Thomas is the preaching minister at First Christian Church, 205 W. Park St., Vandalia, MO 63382 and an adjunct professor of Bible and Preaching at Central Christian College of the Bible, 911 E. Urbandale, Moberly, MO. He is a graduate of Lincoln Christian College (BA) and Lincoln Christian Seminary (MA, MDiv), and Northern Baptist Theological Seminary (DMin).

HBT:?Red Sox?may target big names this winter

The Red Sox have had an average payroll in excess of $170 million the last three years.?With Adrian Gonzalez, Carl Crawford and Josh Beckett departing and David Ortiz, Daisuke Matsuzaka and Cody Ross all set to become free agents, they?re currently looking at something less than half of that for 2013. It figures to give them more flexibility and financial muscle than any other team in the league this winter.

That said, it?s doubtful the Red Sox will jump right back up to $170 million right away. There simply isn?t the talent available in the free agent pool, and overspending for veterans is what got them into the current mess in the first place. Still, they should have feelers out for all of the big names available this winter, and they?ll probably land one or two.

Here are some possibilities:

OF Josh Hamilton: I think this is a big long shot, but the Red Sox would certainly have the money to make a big run at the 2010 AL MVP. Hamilton has stayed healthy this year and hit .286/.352/.575 with 34 homers and 107 RBI in 117 games for the Rangers. He?s the only available option in free agency that could match Adrian Gonzalez as a middle-of-the-order bat. Hamilton, though, would be a huge risk on a long-term contract, not only because of his past battles with addiction but also because of the likelihood of his body breaking down as the enters his mid-30s. Next year will be his age-32 season.

C-1B Mike Napoli: The Red Sox tried to get Napoli from the Angels a couple of years ago, but came up short. If they target him this time, they?d likely pitch him on starting at first base most of the time and catching a couple of times per week. Napoli?s average has collapsed from .320 to .223 this year, but he?s always been more about the secondary skills anyway. Worthy of note: he?s hit .306/.397/.710 with seven homers in 62 career at-bats at Fenway.

1B-OF Nick Swisher: There?s been talk recently of the 32-year-old Swisher aiming for Jayson Werth money (seven years, $126 million), but that?s not within the realm of possibility. Something like $48 million for four years is more likely. The Yankees want to get under the luxury tax threshold come 2014, so they might be willing to let him depart without a big offer. He?d probably be Boston?s best option for a 2013 first baseman. Still, the team shouldn?t be looking to sign non-superstars to long-term deals right now.

1B Justin Morneau: While they?ve been loathe to admit it, the Twins are going nowhere. Dumping the final year and $14 million on Morneau?s deal would make plenty of sense, and now that he seems to have found his stroke, he?d look pretty good as Boston?s No. 5 hitter.

SS Stephen Drew: J.D.?s young brother has the most upside of the free agent shortstops available this winter, and he?ll probably be undervalued this winter after missing almost a year with a busted ankle before returning last month. Shortstop won?t be the Red Sox?s highest priority, but if they can snag Drew on a modest two-year deal, it?d be a nice gamble.

1B-3B Kevin Youkilis: I?m not sure how far-fetched this is, but the main reason Youkilis is gone from Boston is Bobby Valentine, and it seems doubtful that Valentine will be back with the team in 2013. The Red Sox could certainly do worse at first base than their former MVP candidate. The White Sox hold a $13 million option on Youkilis for 2013, but they?re not expected to exercise it.

OF B.J. Upton: Upton has struggled to put it all together in Tampa Bay, but whereas most players enters free agency with their best seasons behind them, Upton may yet have some additional upside. He?d also likely be an excellent defender in Fenway?s tough right field. With Michael Bourn, Shane Victorino and Angel Pagan also available, center field is the lone crowded position in free agency this winter. Should Upton?s stock slip a bit as a result, the Red Sox could pounce.

OF Shin-Soo Choo: The Indians chose to hold on to Choo at the trade deadline, but they could send him packing this winter as they try to keep their payroll down. Choo figures to make $7 million-$8 million in arbitration next year in his final season before free agency.

SP Zack Greinke: The thinking is that the big-market teams will shy away from Greinke due to concerns about how he?d handle the pressure that comes with such a spotlight. The Red Sox may decide to avoid him for that reason. Still, he pretty easily eclipses guys like Edwin Jackson, Anibal Sanchez and Kyle Lohse as the top free agent starter available.

SP Hiroki Kuroda: A year ago, everyone assumed that Kuroda would stay with the Dodgers or return to Japan. Instead, he signed a one-year deal with the Yankees and is working on a terrific season in the AL East. One imagines he?ll want to stay in the Bronx and sign another one-year deal this winter. The Red Sox should at least try to make things more difficult for the Yankees to keep him, though.

SP Dan Haren: Haren?s back woes and recent struggles could lead the Angels to decline his $15.5 million option for 2013 and buy him out for $3.5 million instead. If so, there?s a good chance the Red Sox would pursue him on a one-year deal. Jake Peavy and Gavin Floyd are also possibilities should the White Sox decline their options.

SP Josh Johnson: The Marlins opted to hold on to Johnson at the trade deadline, but if they?re not going to be serious contenders next year, then trading him this winter should be the plan. He?s due $13.75 million next year in his final season before free agency. It?d probably take a couple of very good prospects to pry him away.

New start for I. Coast universities after violence

Closed after a bloody leadership crisis that rocked Ivory Coast in 2010-2011, universities in the commercial capital Abidjan are being refurbished to restore them to temples of learning rather than combat colleges.

On the campus at Cocody in the chic north of the city, newly baptised the Felix Houphouet-Boigny University after the father of the nation, workers have yet to complete renovation. But the vast site is already impressive, with its lecture halls, new student housing and large sports fields.

The site marks a stark contrast with the state of the campus in April 2011, when buildings had been ravaged by conflict and vandalism during the four months of a political crisis after president Laurent Gbagbo refused to admit defeat in elections to his rival Alassane Ouattara.

Some of the students became engaged in two weeks of outright warfare before Ouattara came to power, at the cost of 3,000 lives. Almost as soon as he was in office, Ouattara decided to shut down both universities in Abidjan and launch a major overhaul.

"This is not just renovation. We have been obliged to build from the bottom up because everything was looted, broken and vandalised," Higher Education Minister Ibrahima Cisse Bacongo told AFP.

The work, which has been under way at all five faculties in the west African country -- once the economic powerhouse of the region -- will cost "100 billion CFA francs (153 million euros / $191 million dollars), the equivalent of three new universities," Bacongo said.

For more than 80,000 students, the new academic year that is scheduled to begin on September 3 "will mark a new start, a complete break with the past," he added.

Bacongo said that Ivorian "students were manipulated, exploited under the former regime of Laurent Gbagbo, and they developed a culture of violence in university circles."

For the authorities, a main culprit was the Student and School Federation of Ivory Coast (FESCI), the all-powerful trade union movement which was closely allied to Gbagbo's regime after he took power in 2000.

FESCI has been held responsible for much of the violence on Abidjan's campuses, which spilled over on to the streets, and it ran rackets and a reign of terror, which led even Gbagbo to describe it as a "mafioso organisation."

The union has not been dissolved, as the Ouattara government initially envisaged, but it has been marginalised from power during the closure of the universities.

FESCI secretary-general Augustin Mian puts a brave face on the change in fortunes and said that the movement will "adapt to new demands... For the benefit of learning, peace and serenity must return to the university."

The closure of the universities was not universally welcomed. The party that once backed Gbagbo, the Ivorian Popular Front (FPI), said that it meant the end of higher education in Ivory Coast.

"You don't shut down a university," protested Dedy Sery, a professor of sociology close to the FPI. "It's as if you're decapitating the future of the country," he added, denouncing a "cultural crime."

Sery charged that Ouattara's government undertook "a witchhunt" among the academic staff, who were traditional allies of Gbagbo, long a socialist in opposition before he came to power.

Moreover a large increase in inscription fees, from 6,000 CFA francs (nine euros) to 100,000 CFA francs (150 euros) for the first year, caused an outcry until the authorities brought it back down to 30,000 CFA francs (45 euros).

Meanwhile the contract to renovate the campuses has sparked questions.

Ouattara has ordered an inquiry into the terms under which the tender was made and accepted and sacked Bacongo's financial director for "problems of governance." Many people have objected to the cost of the work, which has more than doubled in two months.

For Eric Ahizi, a 22-year-old student of economic sciences, the imminent start of the academic year will end "a real nightmare... I had a year to finish my master's degree and put myself on the job market, which is swamped today."

Ahizi said he was looking forward to seeing the "fine achievements" of the revamped campus and pointed out that it was now up to students to "look after them".

First evidence discovered of planet's destruction by its star

ScienceDaily (Aug. 20, 2012) ? The first evidence of a planet's destruction by its aging star has been discovered by an international team of astronomers. The evidence indicates that the missing planet was devoured as the star began expanding into a "red giant" -- the stellar equivalent of advanced age. "A similar fate may await the inner planets in our solar system, when the Sun becomes a red giant and expands all the way out to Earth's orbit some five-billion years from now," said Alex Wolszczan, an Evan Pugh Professor of Astronomy and Astrophysics at Penn State, University, who is one of the members of the research team. Wolszczan also is the discoverer of the first planet ever found outside our solar system.

The astronomers also discovered a massive planet in a surprisingly elliptical orbit around the same red-giant star, named BD+48 740, which is older than the Sun with a radius about eleven times bigger. Wolszczan and the team's other members, Monika Adamow, Grzegorz Nowak, and Andrzej Niedzielski of Nicolaus Copernicus University in Torun, Poland; and Eva Villaver of the Universidad Autonoma de Madrid in Spain, detected evidence of the missing planet's destruction while they were using the Hobby-Eberly Telescope to study the aging star and to search for planets around it. The evidence includes the star's peculiar chemical composition, plus the highly unusual elliptical orbit of its surviving planet.

"Our detailed spectroscopic analysis reveals that this red-giant star, BD+48 740, contains an abnormally high amount of lithium, a rare element created primarily during the Big Bang 14 billion years ago," Adamow said. Lithium is easily destroyed in stars, which is why its abnormally high abundance in this older star is so unusual. "Theorists have identified only a few, very specific circumstances, other than the Big Bang, under which lithium can be created in stars," Wolszczan added. "In the case of BD+48 740, it is probable that the lithium production was triggered by a mass the size of a planet that spiraled into the star and heated it up while the star was digesting it."

The second piece of evidence discovered by the astronomers is the highly elliptical orbit of the star's newly discovered massive planet, which is at least 1.6 times as massive as Jupiter. "We discovered that this planet revolves around the star in an orbit that is only slightly wider than that of Mars at its narrowest point, but is much more extended at its farthest point," Niedzielski said. "Such orbits are uncommon in planetary systems around evolved stars and, in fact, the BD+48 740 planet's orbit is the most elliptical one detected so far." Because gravitational interactions between planets are responsible for such peculiar orbits, the astronomers suspect that the dive of the missing planet toward the star before it became a giant could have given the surviving massive planet a burst of energy, throwing it into an eccentric orbit like a boomerang.

"Catching a planet in the act of being devoured by a star is an almost improbable feat to accomplish because of the comparative swiftness of the process, but the occurrence of such a collision can be deduced from the way it affects the stellar chemistry," Villaver explained. "The highly elongated orbit of the massive planet we discovered around this lithium-polluted red-giant star is exactly the kind of evidence that would point to the star's recent destruction of its now-missing planet."

Which Cars Fail New Frontal Car Accident Crash Test? - NOYES ...

IIHS

Frontal car accidents result in over 10,000 deaths each year despite many cars despite favorable ratings in crash studies. However, a new crash test by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) will likely change the number of vehicles passing the test favorably.

Recently, the IIHS released the first round of results of this new crash testing--the frontal overlap tests--simulate a 40-mph frontal collision with an offset barrier, something that experts say better simulates a real-world collision with another car as the driver tries to steer clear. This test is different that the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's frontal tests because those test use a solid barrier that isn't offset. The new test simulates just 25% of the barrier overlapping the front of the car, as opposed to the current 40% which results in the car's wheels ? not the energy-absorbing portion of the crumple zone, which is closer to the center ? take the impact. The crash forces in such an accident are transmitted to the front wheel, suspension system and firewall which could push the front wheel into the cabin, causing serious leg and foot injuries.

Results of a new crash test that focused on luxury cars may concern their owners. Tests on BMW, Mercedes and Lexus all earned "poor" ratings in the new test. In fact, just three of 11 luxury cars from the 2012 model year passed the new crash test. The Acura TL and Volvo S60 earned "good" ratings, while the Infiniti G was rated "acceptable." The Acura TSX, BMW 3 Series, Lincoln MKZ and Volkswagen CC all received "marginal" ratings. The Audi A4, Lexus ES 350, Lexus IS 250/350 and Mercedes-Benz C-Class were rated "poor."

As they test more vehicles, we may see similar results. So, drive safely and watch out for those who don't.

It's not teaching, it's learning - Anne Rooney

I'm very busy at the moment (which is the poor excuse for this post being late today). The main reason is that as well as writing, I'm teaching a summer school in creative writing to American students. The summer school is run by Pembroke and King's Colleges in Cambridge, and the students get to live and work for eight weeks in a lovely environment. They have one-to-one supervisions in King's College (in the courtyard cafe when weather allows) and lectures in Cambridge Union Society. They find the setting delightfully and quaintly English and ancient, and help me to see it afresh.

I'm not really of the belief that you can teach creative writing, but I do think you can encourage people to learn and help them to develop their skills and ideas. What I hadn't anticipated when I started - and it's now six weeks into the eight-week term - is how much I would learn from them.

They bring not only their own wonderful ideas for stories, their voices, their styles and their questions, but also their very different lives and experiences. They are wonderful people. They shine like jewels, sparkling with enthusiasm and insight. Some have a lot of experience of creative writing already and produce quite breathtaking work. Some are new to it and their experiments, though not always successful, are always interesting.

The programme is great, because they have one-to-one supervision and lectures from published, professional authors. Brian Keaney is the other supervisor, and we invite writers of other genres to come as guest lecturers. None of us is a professional teacher of creative writing - we all make a living from writing. That makes it very different from the teaching they get in their home universities.

It has been hard work - there have been 13-hour days and coming home to a house with no food in it. But it has never been exhausting as the students radiate energy. They feed my inspiration and creativity as much as (I hope) I nurture theirs. I shall be very sorry to see them go, but hope they have learned a lot and expect to see at least some of them in publishers' lists in the not-too-distant future.

Daily aspirin usage linked to lower cancer mortality

ScienceDaily (Aug. 10, 2012) ? A large new observational study finds more evidence of an association between daily aspirin use and modestly lower cancer mortality, but suggests any reduction may be smaller than that observed in a recent analysis. The study, appearing early online in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute (JNCI), provides additional support for a potential benefit of daily aspirin use for cancer mortality, but the authors say important questions remain about the size of the potential benefit.

A recent analysis pooling results from existing randomized trials of daily aspirin for prevention of vascular events found an estimated 37% reduction in cancer mortality among those using aspirin for five years or more. But uncertainty remains about how much daily aspirin use may lower cancer mortality, as the size of this pooled analysis was limited and two very large randomized trials of aspirin taken every other day found no effect on overall cancer mortality.

For the current study, American Cancer Society researchers led by Eric J. Jacobs, Ph.D., analyzed information from 100,139 predominantly elderly participants in the Cancer Prevention Study II Nutrition Cohort who reported aspirin use on questionnaires, did not have cancer at the start of the study, and were followed for up to 11 years. They found daily aspirin use was associated with an estimated 16% lower overall risk of cancer mortality, both among people who reported taking aspirin daily for at least five years and among those who reported shorter term daily use. The lower overall cancer mortality was driven by about 40% lower mortality from cancers of the gastrointestinal tract (such as esophageal, stomach, and colorectal cancer) and about 12% lower mortality from cancers outside the gastrointestinal tract.

The reduction in cancer mortality observed in the current study is considerably smaller than the 37% reduction reported in the recent pooled analysis of randomized trials. The authors note that their study was observational, not randomized, and therefore could have underestimated or overestimated potential effects on cancer mortality if participants who took aspirin daily had different underlying risk factors for fatal cancer than those who did not. However, the study's large size is a strength in determining how much daily aspirin use might lower cancer mortality.

"Expert committees that develop clinical guidelines will consider the totality of evidence about aspirin's risks and benefits when guidelines for aspirin use are next updated," said Dr. Jacobs. "Although recent evidence about aspirin use and cancer is encouraging, it is still premature to recommend people start taking aspirin specifically to prevent cancer. Even low-dose aspirin can substantially increase the risk of serious gastrointestinal bleeding. Decisions about aspirin use should be made by balancing the risks against the benefits in the context of each individual's medical history. Any decision about daily aspirin use should be made only in consultation with a health care professional."

Vietnam veteran receives Silver Star 44 years after service

Sgt. John Crosby / Indiana Joint Forces Headquarter

Vietnam veteran Frank Spink (center) receives the Silver Star from Indiana National Guard Adjutant General, Maj. Gen. R. Martin Umbarger (left), and Indiana Congressman Todd Rokita (right), at Indiana Joint Force Headquarters in Indianapolis on Wednesday, Aug. 8, 2012.

By Rebecca Ruiz, NBC News

Forty-four years ago, Frank Spink, a 22-year-old Army sergeant who had been drafted into the Vietnam War, spotted enemy forces approaching in the middle of the night and warned his sleeping platoon leader. Their company was quickly receiving rocket and grenade fire; Spink lost his right arm in the attack and attempted to shoot with his left hand until he passed out.

That was in June 1968, and Spink eventually returned home to Indiana following a stay at Walter Reed Army Medical Center, where he received a Purple Heart.

"It was a mission," Spink, 66, told NBC News. "I never thought a whole lot more about it."

But that night stayed with his platoon leader and second lieutenant John McHenry, who said Spink saved soldiers' lives with his warning.

"Those few seconds that we had made all the difference," he said. "If they had gotten much closer with their firepower, we would have been toast."

McHenry hadn't really spoken about the attack that night, during which he sustained a concussion, until a few years ago. Then he began wondering if his soldiers had ever received recognition for their heroic acts.

"That?s one of the things that haunted me over the years, that the guys didn?t get recognition," McHenry said.

He decided to investigate the records at the National Archives in College Park, Md., four years ago and found an order to award Spink a Silver Star that had nearly been lost to history. McHenry believes the mistake may have been the result of an error in the number that identified Spink.

McHenry called Spink with the good news. "I couldn?t believe it," said Spink, who didn't realize his actions were worthy of the military's third highest honor. "I thought I was supposed to do that."

Earlier this year, Rep. Todd Rokita, R-Ind., who counts Spink as a constituent, lobbied military officials to award the medal quickly.?

"Sgt. Spink did his duty bravely and heroically, and to our shame as a country, we never gave him the honor he deserved. I'm glad we were able to right this wrong and show our appreciation to him and to all of his fellow veterans," said Rokita.

Spink received the medal on Wednesday in Indianapolis at the Indiana National Guard headquarters. In a ceremony attended by many local veterans, Spink asked those who served in Vietnam to stand up and be applauded.

"This is their day also," he said. "We were there to watch out for each other."

Lady Gaga fronts 'Vogue' September issue

Lady Gaga took to Twitter August 9 to unveil her eagerly awaited front cover for the September issue of US Vogue.

"Im so excited to post the SEPT ISSUE OF VOGUE in 30 min! Photographed by MERT & MARCUS," tweeted the songstress, before posting a picture of her stunning front cover.

Sporting huge backcombed hair, the songstress is clad in a hot pink fishtail gown by Marc Jacobs, with styling by Grace Coddington.

The moody full-length image is a stark contrast to the typical close-ups of smiling celebrities that often make the front cover, and it appears to have gone down well with Gaga's 28 million-plus followers.

"My water just broke," wrote one fan, while another remarked a similarity to American drag queen RuPaul.

Vogue has long been amorous with pop stars, with Madonna famously fronting the cover in 1989 and British soul sensation Adele making the grade back in March this year.

Publications regularly look to put the biggest stars on the covers of their September issue; other already revealed covers for September 2012 including Karlie Kloss on the covers of both Vogue Japan and British Vogue, Keira Knightley for the September issue of Harper's Bazaar UK and Victoria Beckham for US Glamour.

Most of the time, a true estate agent?s comparative market place analysis will not characterize the true marketplace worth of the household. As a result, guard your self by obtaining an appraisal performed by an expert appraiser, one that could give an correct, impartial appraisal of your household.

An appraiser calculates a property?s well worth working with a direct sales comparison method -based to the actual promoting, not asking cost, of equivalent properties inside your neighborhood.

Even a house owner can get a reasonably accurate appraisal of their residence. By performing just a little analysis, creating use of an online house appraisal services, and by gathering data from your interactive Dwelling Price Details Solutions readily available in many main cities.

Without the need of possessing to think about a real estate agent?s percentage in the selling price, like a ?for sale by owner? house owner you have much more leeway when determining on an inquiring cost. Nonetheless, ensure that the price you connect to your household is reasonable.

Even though you can set the price just a little higher compared to home appraisal if location or other elements in the home are especially appealing, it truly is inside your ideal interest to be conservative when attaching an inquiring value on your home on the market by proprietor.

Most consumers can make a fair provide on a reasonably priced fsbo residence they like, but will avoid making any provide when the asking price is about too higher.

Buyers are normally advised by a purchaser agent or lawyer to bid below or in the appraised value. Even so, unless the marketplace is sluggish in your area, setting your asking value at 3 to 4% more than the appraised value of the dwelling won?t prevent most severe purchasers.

Selling the Buyer on your Asking Price

Immediately after setting a good value on your house based mostly on the house appraisal, promote the buyer in your inquiring price. You?ll find advantages to shopping for an available by proprietor residence.

First, the promoting process is much less complex for each the vendor along with the buyer. Discovering a buyer is normally quicker, too. A sizable % of FSBO houses that promote had been initially listed using a genuine estate agent, prior to the property owner grew to become disappointed and took issues into their very own palms.

In many instances, the asking value of a house available for sale by owner might be dropped by 6 to 7% from what the actual estate agent had it detailed for, and nonetheless place a lot more revenue in homeowner?s pocket though saving the purchaser big bucks!
